Footings, foundations, drainage, soakaways and full site clearance and preparation. The solid base every build depends on.
Get the groundworks right and everything above them runs smoothly; get them wrong and the problems follow a project all the way to the roof. Fowler Construction carries out the full range of groundworks across Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire: site clearance and preparation, setting out and excavation, footings and foundations, drainage and soakaways, slabs and muck away.
Groundworks are the least glamorous and most important part of any build. They are also where experience shows, because every plot behaves differently once you break ground. We read the site properly, plan for what we are likely to find, and bring the right plant and the right depths to do the job once and do it well.
We work both on our own builds and as a trusted groundworks contractor for other builders and developers who want a dependable, properly run package they do not have to chase. Accurate setting out, correct levels and clean, methodical work make everything that follows easier.
Whether it is a single extension footing or a full development plot, the same standards apply: work to the engineer's design, build to specification, and leave a base the rest of the project can rely on.

We start by stripping and clearing the site, removing vegetation, spoil and any obstructions, then set out and excavate accurately to the engineer's drawings. Getting the setting out and the levels right at this stage is what keeps the whole build true later on.
Drainage and soakaways are installed to the correct falls and depths and designed around your ground conditions, so surface and foul water are dealt with properly and to building regulations. The base is then built up, blinded and compacted in proper layers, with firm edge restraints throughout, so it carries the structure above exactly as it should.
Everything is built to specification and checked as we go, with the building control inspections coordinated so the work is signed off before construction continues. We do not cover up work that has not been checked, because shortcuts at this stage are the ones that cost most to put right.
A tidy, well organised site and straightforward communication mean you always know what stage the groundworks have reached and what happens next, whether you are a homeowner, a developer or another builder relying on us.
You are left with a level, well drained plot and foundations dug to the correct depth, properly formed and signed off by building control, giving the project a stable base for many years to come.
Because we also handle the drainage, the wider groundworks and the building itself, the project moves straight from clearance and foundations through to a finished structure, with no gap between trades and a single, accountable point of contact throughout.
For developers and fellow builders, that reliability is the point. Work that is set out accurately, built to specification and signed off cleanly keeps programmes on track and removes the risk that sits in poorly executed groundwork.

We carry out the complete range of groundworks across Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire, covering site clearance and preparation, setting out and excavation, footings and foundations, drainage and soakaways, concrete slabs and oversites, and muck away. In practice that means we can take a plot from its existing, often overgrown or uneven state right through to a level, well drained base that is ready to build on. We work on our own building projects and also as a standalone groundworks contractor for other builders, developers and homeowners. Whatever the scope, the work is set out accurately, built to the engineer's design and signed off by building control.
Yes. Drainage is a core part of our groundworks service, covering foul drainage to the mains or a treatment system and surface water drainage including soakaways and channel drains. Soakaways are sized and positioned to suit your ground's permeability and set at the correct depth and distance from the building, and all drainage is laid to the right falls so water always moves where it should. Everything is installed to meet building regulations and is tested and inspected as part of the sign off, so you are not left with standing water or problems further down the line.
Yes. Groundworks involve several stages that must be inspected before they are covered up, including foundation excavations before concrete is poured and drainage runs before they are backfilled. We coordinate these building control inspections at the right moments so the work is checked, approved and signed off as we go. This protects you, keeps the project compliant, and means there are no nasty surprises if the property is ever sold or surveyed in future.
There is no single answer, because foundation depth is dictated by the ground itself. As a guide, foundations usually start from around a metre deep, but the exact figure depends on the soil type, any clay or made ground, nearby trees and the load the foundation has to carry. On sites with trees or shrinkable clay, deeper foundations or special measures may be needed to avoid future movement. We assess the conditions, work to the structural engineer's design where required, and have the depth checked and signed off by building control before we pour, so the base is right first time.
Absolutely. Many projects start with a site that is overgrown, sloping, cluttered with old structures or simply unworkable as it stands. We strip vegetation, demolish and remove redundant structures where needed, dig out and cart away spoil, and reduce and level the ground to the correct levels. We can also form access, hardstanding and temporary routes so the rest of the build runs safely and efficiently. The result is a clean, level, properly prepared plot that is ready for foundations or landscaping.
